If you live outside the USA, or are engaged in sales of products or services that are considered “high-risk” such as online gambling, pharmacies or adult content, you will most likely require an International merchant account to process your credit card orders.
International Merchant accounts are not for processing international orders. Merchants can process international orders with a standard Internet Merchant Account as long as the customer has a credit or debit card with the Mastercard or Visa logo.

Merchants in these industries also find it necessary to use a non-US merchant processor where, by nature, they deal in transactions that are of higher risk.
Of course, along with this higher risk comes significantly higher rates on merchant processing services and usually with significantly delayed payments and often with high reserve funds.
